01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
When midday hunger calls for a proper fish lunch around Kayabacho, Wadaya is an enduring local go-to. Set meals featuring dishes like simmered toothfish (ginmutsu), mackerel in sweet miso, or salted grilled mackerel typically arrive with a small side dish of sashimi, giving diners a taste of fresh raw tuna alongside their cooked fish. Served swiftly with a bowl of steamed rice and hot miso soup, these satisfying trays provide dependable fuel for neighborhood office workers.
Beyond the staple braised and grilled choices, the lunch board also features crisp, cylinder-shaped homemade horse mackerel cutlets (aji fry) and seasoned bonito sashimi, with optional sides like natto or a raw egg to customize your tray. Spanning two floors, the restaurant fills quickly during the peak lunch rush, but efficient turnaround makes it easy to drop in even on your own.
Come sundown, Wadaya shifts into a relaxed izakaya where seasonal fish pairs naturally with cold and warmed sake. Fresh sashimi platters, rich simmered cuts, and a rotating list of regional brews set an easygoing rhythm after work. To finish, rice dishes such as negitoro rolls, tekka maki, or ochazuke round out the spread, accommodating casual solo dinners and convivial group gatherings alike.
